Emilia Clarke Reveals Drogon’s Tragic Fate After the Death of Daenerys

It seems like it was just yesterday when the final season of ‘Game of Thrones’ graced the television screens, leaving fans feeling divided about the ending of the show. After an entire year of impatiently waiting for the final season, over 17 million fans tuned in for its opening, but things quickly went downhill after unexpected plot twists left a sour taste in eveyone’s mouths.

HBO | Drogon carried Daenerys’ body out of the Red Keep

Probably the most shocking plot twist in season 8 was the death of Daenerys Targaryen, who was considered the most deserving candidate for the coveted throne.

The tragic twist was heartbreaking, to say the least, but what left most fans confused was when the Mother of Dragons was carried out of the Red Keep by her only surviving dragon, Drogon, to an undisclosed location in the end.

After Jon Snow killed the love of his life, Daenerys, in the throne room, her dead body was carried out by Drogon, who melted the throne with dragon fire out of anguish for losing his mother. No one knew where Drogon was going as flew over the ocean, eventually disappearing into the horizon.

To solve the mystery behind the tragic ending, Entertainment Weekly’s James Hibberd spoke to the Dragon Queen herself, Emilia Clarke, in his book called Fire Cannot Kill a Dragon.

Knowing the bubbly actress, her response to the question was pretty funny at first. Whenever someone asks Clarke about Drogon’s fate or where he headed out after his mother’s death, he responds, “Oh, Hawaii.”

But in all seriousness, the actress has a pretty convincing theory about what could have happened and it’s even more heartbreaking than Daenerys’ death.

She thinks that Drogon was agrieved by the death of his mother that he carried her body around until it decomposed or until he simply couldn’t fly anymore.

HBO | Drogon destroyed the iron throne after Daenerys was killed

Since Drogon was the last living dragon in Game of Thrones, his eventual death would live the fictional world without any magical creatures, but some fans say that Jon’s dagger may not have been the end of Daenerys.

In the final episode of the show, after Bran becomes king, Sam briefed him about Drogon’s last sighting. He said that the dragon was spotted flying East, which left many fans speculating if he was taking the body to the the high priestess of R’hllor in Essos who could potentially resurrect the fallen Queen.
